Screen Printing | That'd be fun ...
I was checking out this post from Graphic Hug (check it out for sure), and I longed to get back into screen printing again. So many possibilities (paper, cloth, clothing, etc). I had a great time with it in undergrad. The hands on process is just fantastic. It would be a really fun hobby/art form to do on the side. Maybe someday.
Harry Potter Illustrated Movie Posters
I was checking out the TBP (The Best Part) blog (excellent resource for graphic design and typography examples & inspiration; check it out and subscribe!), and I saw this great post on modern day movie posters redesigned.
As I tracked down the original post over at Alice's blog "My Modern Met". There, I found these sweet illustrated posters of the Harry Potter movies! Love it. Enjoy.
Kookaburra Liquorice | Really Good
You may not like black licorice. I used to not. But, as it turns out, I was just eating crappy black licorice (i.e. the black jelly bean - so nasty). So I encourage you as well (if you are a current hater) to check out quality, real, licorice.
This stuff is fantastic. My wife and I are chillin' at a local coffee shop (Ithaca Coffee Company) and we picked up some of this to munch on as we hang out. Wow, it is a full flavored, chewy, molassesy-goodness experience from Australia.
I would also recommend Panda Licorice. Also very good.
Experimenting w/ Newsprint | MAk Design
A few weeks ago I began experimenting with running newspaper (print) through my HP inkjet printer. I can't remember what inspired me, but I just whipped up a design or 2 to slap on a legal size sheet of newsprint that I cut out from the USA Today. I liked the mundane repetition of numbers on the daily stock reports, and the wild colors of the weekly weather forecast page. Here is what I've come up with so far (I'd love to hear what you think). I need to run other things through my printer (i.e. brown paper bags, other random paper scraps, packaging, etc. I'll keep you posted on the results. What have you run through your inkjet? I like how the colors turned out in the negative & positive space in this one.
This is a typeface that I have been working on recently. I haven't 'named' it or anything yet. But it has been a fun project. I've never designed a typeface before, at least not to the point of making it functional. Any good sites or DIY articles/resources you would recommend?
Anyway, I just slapped it on the daily market trends page. I like it.

I had the pleasure of seeing
Cina is a multi-discipline creative. Graphic design, typography, motion graphics, and spinning house music. Yes, house music. Awesome. Gnarly. (That's probably why I like Tycho/ISO50 so much as well - Designer/Musician)
He also inspired me to start carrying around a small notebook to capture creative thoughts, ideas, photos, scraps, drawings, ideas, textures, etc. I still do that today.

This is a great way to rethink voicemail. We all hate it. It's true. We'd rather text or email, but not leave voicemails. And with the advent of all the mobile web/computing handsets, there is no need for the archaic system of our current voicemail. I like this fresh take. It makes tons of sense.

Hike 1 > Glen Eyrie, Colorado Springs, CO
As a regularity, I hope to be hiking. Also, as a regularity, I hope to be posting those hikes (photos, video, thoughts, experiences, etc) on this blog. Partially in hopes that it will get me out more, and partially because the outdoors is just a passion of mine. So let's do this ...
Hike 1 - Glen Eyrie, Colorado Springs, CO
I was out at the Glen for work. It was pretty busy, but my buddy Luke and I got a quick hike in one night. We hiked up the fire road behind the Glen's castle. We followed that up to the top of the ride behind the castle (see photo below).
You can see the pick in the top center of the photography, there is actually a radio tower or something up there. You may not be able to see it. But it's up there. We hiked up to the top of that. (All photos taken from my phone, I apologize for the lack of quality.)
This is the view we got of Colorado Springs below.
The is my buddy Luke and I at the top. I know, it's ridiculous. It was dead dark outside; I used the flash on my LG Dare phone. It was insanely bright. Clearly, you can tell by my expression. We tried it twice, but this is the best I could muster. Apparently Luke didn't have an issue. (I've got night vision, that's why I had to squint ...)

Gear:
I didn't actual expect us to hike all the way up, but we did. I was wearing my Patagonia clogs that I got at Sierra Trading Post last year, ha-ha. My calves were toast afterward. And I had my Patagonia fleece that I got at the Burlington, VT Outdoor Gear Exchange (2nd hand rack, $20!), but it was too hot for that.
While we were out at the Glen, we also saw some wildlife:

This is blowing my mind!
It is very iPhone'ish with its finger movements. But it is totally rethinking what mobile computing could look like using the tablet model. Two 7" screens that fold into a book format that you could slip into your bag or carry under your arm. This is crazy.

Newsfire RSS Reader
I've been using Newsfire (RSS reader) for the last few weeks now. Part of the reason I tried it out was because my Google Reader was chalked full to the gills ready to burst with 800+ new items to view. I needed a change. So I stumbled upon Newsfire, and installed it hoping that it would re-inspire me to slug through all those unread items.
It seems to be working so far. I have been plugging away at it pretty hard for 2 weeks, and I have gotten my list down to 299! What up!
I love the ease of use, the pretty graphics (I'm a sucker, why do you think I have a Mac?), simplicity, etc. If (when) I get an iPhone, I'm gonna download Dave's Ski Lodge App for sure!
David Watanabe, the designer/builder, has a host of other stellar iPhone apps and applications (for Mac) that are really well made. Check them out here!

... under-developed. I think it needs some work. It is still clunky and questionable as to its usefulness/functionality. Has anyone messed with this much? I haven't found it worth my time ... yet ... I'm hopeful.

Gnarly Gear Deals | Online
For all those "gear-heads" out there, here are a few great places online to find sweet deals. These are my personal favorites, and the ones that I have most experience with. But I would love hear hear other tip-offs as well. Please comment below.
Sierra Trading Post (STP)
"Great deals. Great brands.", is their motto. I have ordered from them the most, everything from fleece (Kavu), to snowshoes (TSL/Powder Ridge, 52% off, plus another 20% with an email coupon!), to packs (Timbuk2), etc. Get on their weekly email lists for deals/coupons, etc!
Backcountry.com & Backcountryoutlet.com are both great for finding sometimes outrageous deals on high quality gear. I purchased a pair of K2 Fugitives (soft, buttery, twin-tipped, park/powder) skis 2 winters ago. They were $680 retail, I picked them up from Backcountry for $140 (80% off!). Got a pack recently from there too (Lowe Alpine, at least 50% off). Like I said, outrageous deals.
Backcountry is also linked to Steep & Cheap, which I will talk about below; that's a whole different animal.
Campmor (old logo, but same idea)
Located in Paramus, NJ. Though the deals aren't quite as sick or frequent as they are at STP & Backcountry, Campmor is very worthy of attention. I have picked up everything from knives (Gerber), to packs (Mountainsmith), to trekking poles (Tubbs) from Campmor.
Steep & Cheap (SAC)
"One killer deal, one item at a time until it's all gone." is their motto. There are monster discounts here, but the catch is, only one item at a time, and when it sells out, it's gone. So you have to act fast. The site has come a long way to help you gauge how long you have before it sells out in your size, etc. For Mac users (other options for PC users), there is an SAC widget you can put on your dashboard, to keep updated on the deals. Check it out! (I have come very close, but haven't purchased anything from SAC ... yet.) SAC provides sick deals on outdoor gear in general.
With the advent of SAC and that style of deal sharing, several other sites have popped up with the same plan, just selling different types of gear for specific sports. And a lot, if not most, of these 1-deal-at-a-time sites draw from deals that originate at Backcountry.
Tramdock is all about ski gear.
Brociety is big on snowboarding gear.
Dog Funk is another online retailer.
Whiskey Militia is all about skate/snowboard/surf style. They carry clothing, bags/packs, accessories (shades, watches), etc.
Bonktown is where the cycling gear deals are at.
Chain Love is the same idea. Also, check out Huck 'n Roll.
Suffice it to say, with these sites, I never pay anywhere near full price (even including shipping), ever.
Start hunting deals and get outside!
