Top 40 tips to help you take the very best photos | Pixel Photography

"1: Face your fears
Identify the photographic technique you’re least confident about and resolve to master it. For example, if your camera’s advanced flash modes fill you with fear, try spending just 15 or 20 minutes each day practising how to use them. This way you’ll be able to build up your confidence bit by bit, without becoming overwhelmed.
2: It’s all about you
Don’t get too hung up on equipment. Yes, it’s nice to have the best brands and the hottest technology, but ultimately a camera is just a device that captures and records light. You are the visionary. Only you make it happen.
3: Get it right in-camera
Always push yourself to achieve the perfect shot in-camera. A few extra minutes spent in the field tweaking exposures, fitting filters or refining compositions is always preferable to relying on Photoshop to bail you out. Software never produces such satisfying results."
These are great tips! As my wife and I are in the market for our own DSLR (finally time to upgrade from traditional SLR's!), we are excited to employ some of these classic reminders and tips. You can see some of my work here and here and here, oh and here too.

Canon EOS 500D vs 450D - Which one?

Debating between the 450D and the newer 500D. Is it worth the upgrade and the extra $150? I am swaying toward the 500D for the video and higher ISO sensitivity. But .. not sure.

I would love to hear your thoughts!

Photos Around Ithaca, NY

Some photos from around Ithaca. It's always fun to get out and do some spontaneous photography around town. It's been too long since I've been out.

Mobile Printers

This is the Polaroid PoGo. A handheld portable inkless (Zink - Zero Ink) printer. It allows you to print photos on the fly either via Bluetooth from your mobile phone (or $$$ camera), a direct connection to your digital camera via Pictbridge software, or your computer. Also,

Fujifilm has come out with their own version, but I'm not sure that it is inkless. You can check out a brief review here. The only thing I like about it (more than the PoGo), is that it doesn't print borderless. I like the playing card sized irregular borders of the MP-300 Pivi from Fujifilm.

You may also have heard the grave news that Polaroid is discontinuing their analog instant film. Please mourn this eminent loss with me. But, also gain courage, strength, and hope as we seek to defy the impossible, and bring back Polaroid instant film!

I like this idea of mobile photo printing. It allows for so many possibilities for a creatives like myself, or photographers, scrap-bookers, etc. I love the idea of photo journaling, that I could snap shots with my phone or digital camera, print them, and immediately paste them into my journal and write about them. I can't help but think of backpacking through Europe with this equipment. Endless possibilities. Yummy.

Polaroids | NYC

I finally did it. I broke into my fresh, brand new, Polaroid stockpile. Awesome.

I took my wife on a surprise trip to New York City, New York 2 weeks again to celebrate her Birthday and Valentines day at the same time. It was great. We stayed in Midtown in a nice hotel with a great view of Time Square. Below are the results of my first attempts at Polaroiding. Enjoy.

This site is amazing, and a genius idea. It allows you to search for photos on Flickr by color. You can search using up to a total of 10 colors. Wow. Check it out, it's fun to mess around with.

( ... )

......................................................................................................
First Post. Challenging. Intimidating. Scary.

Fundamental Issue #1: Most people blog for the sake of hearing themselves talk. (Which immediately brings the substance of this post into question. Ha-ha.) They assume they have a vast wealth of knowledge about this topic or that topic, or that people have copious amounts of useless time to dedicate to the reading of their online melodramas.

Do I assume that I have anything more interesting to offer? Perhaps not. Do I have vast volumes of knowledge to bequeath upon the masses. Most definitely not, and I will try not to blog like I do. But, none the less, I don't want to be just another one of those.

I hope this to be more about photography & design than anything else. But if I get inspired, perhaps I will go on a few rants about politics, religion, the church, etc. Don't think I won't. I just want it to be interesting and helpful. I hope to post designed & photographed eye candy, samples of awesome work elsewhere, and whatever else I come across.

Fundamental Issue #2: I do not have a digital camera of my own. Gross. If I want to shoot, I have to borrow. Annoying. That's way less impulsive, spontaneous, and convenient. Clearly. Also, I don't have a scanner. Gross x2. I have limited abilities to import textures and any other awesome material I find.

So all the 'sweet eye candy' that I hope to post
at this point will have to be purely based from the existing libraries that I have right now. But, all that said, I have no excuses for not producing any work at the present. Samples to come soon, hopefully.

Here is a shot from the Amsterdam Airport last June, 07.
